Biography

Recognized for an outstanding four decades of invaluable contributions to his field of chemical process commercialization and scale-up, Dr. Shertok parlays his extensive knowledge of the process industries into his role with Process Industries Consultants, Inc., a processing and materials-related consulting company (a New York State S Corporation) that provides process commercialization and scale-up consulting services in the specialty chemical, materials, separations, and biotechnology arenas. On a day-to-day basis, in his role as president, he consults in product commercial viability in the areas of chemicals, materials, and processes. Dr. Shertok is also a Visiting Scholar at Rochester Institute of Technology’s School of Chemistry and Materials Science. In addition, Dr. Shertok is involved with three start-up companies, one in Medical Devices, one in manufacturing a novel Soccer Glove, and the last pioneering novel use of cold plasmas. Dr. Shertok is a hands-on process/product development and commercialization consultant who drives multimillion-dollar organic and inorganic growth. He is known for his ability to articulate direction, gain buy-in, interact with all layers of the organization and build cohesive, empowered teams that surpass expectations and goals, often with the use of limited resources. Dr. Shertok also has extensive knowledge of OSHA and EPA regulations. Dr. Shertok owns several U.S. Patents including: U.S. Patent 7,507,697, a method for the oxidative cleaning of food processing equipment; U.S. Patent 7,189,322, a charged membrane; U.S. Patent 7,022,274, a gas sintered carbon block and method; U.S. Patent 6,849,185, also a charged membrane; and U.S. Patent 6,083,393, a hydrophilic membrane. He also has a U.S. patent pending for a non-caustic cleaning formulation for heavy food soils. While most personnel specialize in one facet or another, he has chosen to be broad. Dr. Shertok has changed his career path and technology specialization every five to six years. He has done research and development, manufacturing, operations, safety and quality assurance. He has changed his technologies: chemicals, materials, biotechnology, membranes and filtration, and formulated products. He has worked for large and small companies. This has given him great breadth, depth and perspective. A member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, the American Radio Relay League, and the Rochester Professional Consultants Network, Dr. Shertok is a major contributor in his field due to a combination of his prior industry experiences and his educational background. He began with a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art, and eventually earned a Ph.D. in chemical engineering from Princeton University. He started his professional experience with Union Carbide in 1975, moving up the ladder to an R/D Group Leader position. After Union Carbide’s restructuring after the 1983 Bhopal incident, Dr. Shertok served in different, diverse companies, including Amoco Corporation (advanced materials, biotechnology), Pall-Gelman Corporation (membrane filtration), Graver Technologies (ion exchange, metal filters, carbon separations), and Rochester Midland Corporation (formulated products). In June, 2014, Dr. Shertok formed Process Industries Consultants. Throughout the course of his productive career, Dr. Shertok has built a sustainable, professional legacy. However, he truly believes that his greatest legacy is raising, along with his wife, three accomplished children into independent adulthood. Looking ahead, Dr. Shertok intends to experience the continued growth of his career, expand his consulting practice, and continue to build companies.
